Art, emotions and colors – Interview with Instagram-sensation Callen Schaub

Taking the online art community by colorful storm in 2019 and 2020 – Callen Schaub has set a solid mark in the digital world of color. With an innovative approach, often performed live, Callen continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression. We sat down to have a talk with Callen from his hometown of Montreal, Canada.

How did it all start?

I have always gravitated towards art and creative expression. It has been an outlet for me and part of my mental wellness since a very young age. I grew up in a creative home and was always able to express and celebrate my art. I went to an arts high school and university, where I found my style and solidified my artistic expression.

Where did your spinning technique come about?

We were given a painting assignment in university where we could do whatever we wanted. I watched as my peers approached their canvases with a paintbrush. In an effort to be different I decided I wasn’t going to use a paintbrush and instead got a potters wheel and started to spin my canvas. Fascinated by the lack of control and chaos I kept on innovating this method. Later I built my spin machine which I still use to this day and have added elements of technique over the years, pushing the boundaries of my process.

What are your thoughts on the process of entering into the landscape of being a “professional artist”?

It’s tough. I am an artist, that is what I know. Adding the business side of things has and will always be a challenge that I look forward to. It takes a lot of help and a team of remarkable experts to navigate the “professional” side of things. Like any business, you need the right people in your corner to journey that landscape.

What do colors mean to you?

Colors are everything. I enjoy how Colors can be compared to a spectrum of emotion, inducing reactions and judgements. By creating a riot of color I hope to inspire wonderment and help allow people to be okay with feeling the spectrum of emotion, understanding that it is always good to feel.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

My inspiration is inspiration. When I hear from someone, somewhere in the world about how art has touched them, I relate immediately and want to create more. I read about how it has helped someone through a challenging time or allowed them to celebrate all the joy and colors in the world.

What positive effects on mental health, would you say art can have?

The healing properties of creativity are endless. I work out my mental wellness through my art and bearing witness to the art of others. I believe wholeheartedly that art, in every form, is paramount to a positive mental being. With this in mind I am building a charitable foundation that will focus on fostering mental wellbeing at its core through equity-charged art projects. From your perspective, how will we experience, interact with and consume art in say 5 years from now?

Technology has been integral in pushing my artistic endeavors out to the world. I see the true age of digital art in whatever form coming soon and look forward to being a part of it.
